To mark the first ever Milano Arch Week, a week-long series of events in Milan focusing on contemporary architecture, SpazioFMG per l’Architettura is hosting the first solo exhibition on El Equipo Mazzanti to take place in Italy. With a preview at 6.30 pm on Friday 16th June, We play, you play (curated by Giancarlo Mazzanti and Luca Molinari) will focus on the Colombian architectural group’s approach and experimental style. To mark the opening of the exhibition, there will be a presentation of “El Equipo Mazzanti”, the latest title in the “Inspiration and Process in Architecture” series published by Moleskine. The event will be attended by curators Matteo Schubert and Francesca Serrazanetti.

SpazioFMG per l’Architettura, the Milan-based gallery and showroom owned by Iris Ceramica e FMG Fabbrica Marmi e Graniti, is exhibiting the work of the visionary Colombian architectural practice El Equipo Mazzanti. We play, you play is an interactive exhibit which turns the gallery into a real workshop. Here, play becomes the key to interpreting the work and projects of the group led by Giancarlo Mazzanti.

SpazioFMG will be providing twenty work benches, where visitors can sit down and experiment with Mazzanti’s fundamental architectural forms for themselves. His architecture has been reproduced in the shape of colourful “toys”, which the public can use as the building blocks for new compositions. The results of the play sessions will then become part of the exhibit itself. We play, you play is an evolving exhibition, a place for people to think and create architecture.

At the same time El Equipo Mazzanti’s projects and methodology will be documented through diagrams, drawings, photos and videos on the gallery walls, focusing on the ideas and compositions behind the group’s work. Projects featured in the exhibition include the El Porvenir and Timayui kindergartens in Bogotà and Santa Marta, the Fundación Pies Descalzos in Cartagena and the Marinilla Educational Park in Bogotà, as well as designs for the new Velodrome and sports facilities for the 2010 South American Games in Medellin.

As Luca Molinari, the gallery’s scientific director and co-curator of this exhibition, explains: “We play, you play is a unique opportunity for SpazioFMG. The gallery is hosting another Italian premiere once again, bringing Giancarlo Mazzanti and El Equipo Mazzanti’s experiments and amazing projects to Italy for the first time ever. Over the years we have welcomed and reproduced many different landscapes from all over the world in the heart of Milan – from Mexico to Norway, Lebanon to South-East Asia and, naturally, Italy – and they now include the cities of Colombia. It is here, in the fragile, unplanned peripheries of cities like ogotà and Medellin, that Mazzanti’s architecture creates excellent new focal points open to everyone – gyms, museums and libraries, for example. On this occasion the gallery is being turned into a workshop where visitors can play with Mazzanti’s colours and shapes and build evernew and surprising combinations.”

To mark the opening of the exhibition, there will be a presentation of “El Equipo Mazzanti”, the latest title in the “Inspiration and Process in Architecture” series published by Moleskine. The event will be attended by curators Matteo Schubert and Francesca Serrazanetti, and by Giancarlo Mazzanti and Luca Molinari.
